Did Buick ever use a manual transmission with...
« on: May 23, 2013, 02:50:21 PM »
...their 3.1L V6 models?

I\'m seriously looking to transplant the 98 Century motor into the buggy, but the primary hurdle is finding a way to mate this engine to a manual transmission.

My best bet is finding out if this particular engine was ever used by Buick (or one of its cross over platforms) with a manual transmission, then sourcing said transmission.

Can you help at all?

3.1L/3100 L82

The L82 (\"M-code\") was an updated, SFI version of the MPFI LH0, produced from 1993 through 1999. It featured a structural oil pan, a stiffer redesigned engine block, and sequential fuel injection. Output for this version was up 20 hp (15 kW), over the previous Gen II LH0, to 160 hp (119 kW) at 5200 rpm and 185 lb·ft (251 N·m) at 4000 rpm. Compression Ratio for the L82 was 9.5:1 and the bore measured 89 mm (3.5 in) while the stroke was 84 mm (3.3 in) giving it a displacement of 191 CID (3,136 cc). This engine is notable for its cooling system issues which may lead to blown head gaskets and cracked heads if the engine is not maintained properly.

Applications:

1994–1999 Buick Century
1994–1996 Buick Regal
1994–1996 Chevrolet Beretta
1994–1996 Chevrolet Corsica
1995–1999 Chevrolet Lumina
1997–1999 Chevrolet Malibu
1993–1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme (1993 received both LH0 and L82 3.1 L motors)
1994–1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera
1997–1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass GLS
1994–1999 Pontiac Grand Prix
1994–1998 Pontiac Grand Am
1994–1998 Buick Skylark
1994–1998 Oldsmobile Achieva
1995–1999 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

So far the only ones that used a 5 speed are the 2.2L versions.

Do you think the 2.2L tranny would mate or even hold up to the 3.1L output??

Edit: Looks like the 92\' Grand Prix came with a 5 speed for its 3.4L engine - I wonder if that would work...

I think the best thing to do is to go to dealer and see if maybe they will let you talk to a mechanic that does that type of work or call ATC or anyone else you know that works at a trans shop and they will be able to tell you what it will mate up to and then you can go junkyard hunting. I don\'t know or have access to anything with that type of info.

I stopped by on my lunch yesterday and me and Jeff tossed the idea around a bet.

Basically its down to the following:

- looking into 90\'s model Camaro V6 Rally Sport
- looking into the 90\'s model Grand Prix that had a 5 speed with its 3.4L motor

But I have another question we talked about and wanted to get your opinion.

The bolt pattern I have is 4x115 and its severely limiting my wheel choices.  I really want to move up to a set of 17\'s as this is for street use.

What is your opinion on ever so slightly modifying wheels using the 4x114.3 bolt pattern?

We are talking a fraction differance at .07  compared to the 4x115.

Do you happen to have any cars are the show with that bolt pattern by chance we could try a test fit? I don\'t know anyone personally with a vehicle that uses that pattern.

We were thinking worse case, a machine shop could mill our that smell bit for the lug nuts if they won\'t sit properly.

My main concern is safety and the rims not falling off for some reason.

What if it doesn\'t fit - can you guys return it?  lol

Dumb question I know

Edit: What I\'ve found on the internet, a lot of places say people commonly refer to 4x114.3 as 4x115 and vice versa.  Almost as if they are the same thing.

Of course! As long as we don\'t mount a tire on it. I can order 1 tues and prob have it Thursday. Go to atdwheels.com and do a detailed search and that will give u the opportunity to look them up by size and bolt pattern. C if u like one inparticular or ill just get whatever is closest if u don\'t like what they got.

OK here are two choices, but not sure on the price difference (would prefer money go towards awesome tires, so lower rim price is a plus)

Focal 421B X in 17 x 7.5 (4x4.50)

or

DRIFZ 07B FX 16 x 7  (4x4.50)

Opinions? Which of the two do you like? lol

Do you know if those Drifz come without the red limp?

I like the red lip, I have it on my stock wheels I painted, but if I can get it without the red lip it would be better.
